Men’s Tungsten Rings – Could They Become the Gold Standard in Men’s Wedding Rings?
Have you ever had that experience where you found out about something new – like a new hybrid car – and then all you see or hear about over the next few weeks is that car? First you see one next to you at a red light, and then a friend tells you he just bought one. The strangest thing about this phenomenon is that before someone mentioned it, you didn’t even know it existed. Well, this just happened to me again, only this time it wasn’t with a car; it was with men’s tungsten rings.
I was talking with a good friend of mine who is getting married later this month, and he told me his fiancé had just talked him into getting a tungsten ring instead of the white gold ring he was planning on buying. When I first heard the name of this metal – tungsten carbide – I thought it sounded like a metal that would be used to make microelectronics. My friend agreed and said that’s exactly what he thought. But the truth is men’s tungsten rings are quickly becoming the most popular alternative metal for men’s wedding rings.
On the way home from work that day, I passed a billboard that was advertising, of all things, men’s tungsten rings. It said something about how tungsten lasts forever, just like your love. Come to think of it, most of the guys I know who have been married for a while are still wearing a worn-down yellow gold ring, which probably bears little resemblance to the ring’s original detailing. Gold may be a beautiful metal for jewelry, but it also very soft.
Men are known to be pretty hard on rings, so it makes sense to wear a metal that won’t wear down. Men’s tungsten rings are made from one of the hardest and densest metals known to man. This means they will hold their shape and shine for many years to come. At least that’s how my friend explained it.
Then the strangest thing happened. My mom called to tell me about the special anniversary gift she just ordered for my dad. Their 40th wedding anniversary was coming up, and she told me she had planned on surprising him with a brand new wedding ring. I was picturing another white gold ring like the one he’s worn for years. Surprise! She too was wowed by the selection of men’s tungsten rings and started telling me all about the incredible strength of this metal. Not only that, she was able to get the ring in Dad’s size – an 18 – without the need to place a special order. She was really excited about how affordable it was.
By this time, I was starting to feel like I was living in the Twilight Zone. I mean really, I thought, “How many times in one week am I going to hear about men’s tungsten rings?” I was half expecting someone to show up at my door trying to sell me one. From what I’m told, these rings are becoming so popular that they may become a threat to gold sales, especially with gold prices going up so sharply. Not only are they a lot cheaper than gold, tungsten rings are also available in a more exciting array of designs. The story begins slowly capturing the pace and the isolation of a poor working man"s life as Sean contemplates the past trying to figure out how his once hopeful life has turned into poverty and melancholy. It gains speed as the family grows hostile and things begin to run out of control until they explode and everything in their lives is changed irrevocably. But rather than keep talking about the story I think you"d be more compelled to read 8 Days a Week if you knew my inspiration for it I grew up with traditional views of gender inequality: men were supposedly all selfish bastards that kept all women from achieving equality. So I grew up being mad at the majority of men for this (especially after my teen years when I was ousted from my "one of the guys" status as a tomboy.) When I moved back to Portland Oregon from L.A. I began working as an assistant landscaper and handyperson and was soon challenged to change all of my views on gender inequality issues because first of all the landscape customers tended to not respect me and most of the customers were women. Male customers assumed I wouldn"t have been hired if I weren"t useful for something but female customers acted as if it was ridiculous for a female to be working in "a man"s job". Second of all most of the female customers had such impractical and illogical thought processes that they made me cringe to see that some of what I"d heard men I"d dubbed misogynists say about women was actually true of a lot of women. And third of all as I overheard conversations between different workmen I found out that a great deal of men are taken advantage of and abused by women: they"re expected to work in lousy jobs they hate that take all of their time and energy and give all their money to women who spend it all freely and keep having totally unnecessary babies that can"t even be properly provided for. They spend their whole lives working themselves ragged and often their wives divorce them and take their kids house and money. But no one calls this domestic abuse it"s just called a man"s life. And two years into the job I began going to some writing workshops some of which were run by and for women.
