The Rolex Datejust Vs Rolex Day-date President
The two most popular models of Rolex wristwatches are the Rolex Day-Date Presidential and the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust. The Datejust was introduced in 1945, while the Day-Date President was first showcased in 1956 at the Basel Fair. These models became the flagship models, taking Rolex to new heights. Discerning customers have appreciated these models for their appearance and unique functionality. A comprehensive review and comparison of these models will help you understand the basic differences between them.
How is a Rolex Datejust different from a Rolex Day-Date Presidential?
Basic Difference: The basic difference between the two, which is evident in their names as well, is while the Datejust models display only the date, in the case of the Rolex Day-Date Presidential models, you get to see both the date and the day. The date is displayed through a tiny aperture at the 3 o’clock position. In Presidential models, the day is spelt out (in 26 languages) at the 12 o’clock position.
Metal Used: The Oyster Perpetual Datejust is available in stainless steel, 18k yellow/white gold and Rolesor (steel and any one form of gold). The Lady Datejust is also available in pink (rose) gold and platinum. Of all the prevalent models, the stainless steel and two-tone versions of Datejust have been very popular.
On the other hand, the Day-Date models are not available in stainless steel. These are made exclusively in platinum or 18ct yellow, white or pink gold.
Size of the Case: All Rolex Day-Date models are available with a case of size 36mm for men as well as for women, while the case size is different in the Datejust models. The standard case size for men is 36mm and for women it is 26/29mm. Rolex also offers a mid-sized version in Datejust models, which features a case of size 31mm. Recently, Rolex launched a special edition of Datejust at the Basel Fair in 2008 that features a case of 34mm size.
The early Datejust models featured a domed back similar to that found in the Rolex Bubbleback. Although the early President case was large, it never had a domed back. So, if you are planning to buy a vintage variety of the watch, make sure you are cognizant of this model difference.
Bracelet: The style of bracelet in these two popular Rolex models has always been one of the key factors for identifying them. The Datejust models initially flaunted the Jubilee Bracelet. The Jubilee bracelet gives a unique look to the watch with three central links perfectly complimented by broader links on the edge. On the other hand, in 1956, when Rolex Day-date model was launched, it sported a new bracelet known as the “President” bracelet. This bracelet has become popular for its powerful appearance featuring broader central link offset by narrower links on the sides. In many popular models, the President bracelet flaunts sparkling diamonds on the central link. Another standard feature that can be found in most Day-Date models is the concealed clasp in the bracelet, unlike in Datejust models.
By 1957 (one year after Day-Date model was launched), Rolex offered three types of bracelets for its Datejust line namely, the usual Jubilee bracelet, the Oyster bracelet and the leather strap. The Oyster bracelet features a central link flanked by narrower links on its sides. Some Datejust models are available with the Super President bracelet option.
In 2000, Rolex released the Day-Date watch with an Oyster bracelet option, which was available in 18k yellow gold, white gold and pink (rose) gold.
The “Jubilee” bracelet is also available in “only steel version” in Stainless Steel Datejust models. Since, President models are not available in steel, there is no such bracelet style for them. However, you have the choice of the “Super Jubilee” Karat bracelet in yellow gold.
