A Steel pipe is being carried down a hallway 9ft. wide. At the end of the hall there is a right-angled turn into a narrower hallway 6 ft wide. What is the length of the longest pipe that can be carried horizontally around the corner?

no calculus, just trig…
the pipe will take up its greatest displacement at 45 degrees..so, draw a diagram with a 45 degree angle, intersecting the interior corner of your turn in the hallway.
Using some trig you get
sin(45)=9/x AND cos(45)=6/y AND X+Y=pipelength limit
sqrt(2)/2=9/x AND sqrt(2)/2=6/y
sqrt(2)x=18 AND sqrt(2)y=12
x=12.728 AND Y=8.485
therefore, pipelength=X+Y
12.728+8.485=21.213ft.
This is the limit, in fact, this pipelength would hit the two exterior walls and the interior corner of the turn.. so, you need to go under this length.. for all intensive purposes, I would consider 21ft to be the max length….
