How do you show personality in pictures?
I keep getting the advice that I need to show personality in my portraits but I am unsure how. They keep saying add props that mean something to the person but for example I have no idea what prop to add for my friends photo shoot. She is not in any clubs or anything at school, she dosen’t play any sports or anything, her favorite activities are reading, fashion, makeup, and watching music videos. But I am unsure of how to bring her personality into the pictures!! Could the location that we do the photo shoot bring personality to the pictures?? If so how?? Any advice or tips?? Thanks!!
Capturing personality is twofold:
1. You place the person in an environment that they are comfortable being in… it might mean shooting at their home in familiar surroundings.
2. Talk to the person… find out what they do in their everyday life and quite simply dress them accordingly.
If she likes horseback riding then throw on the jeans, a country shirt or tee-shirt and cowboy hat… put a strand of grass in her mouth and make her laugh. You may catch her in spirit and that’s the personality in the shot.
It’s important to get your subject to laugh and be comfortable with you so don’t expect to walk in, do the shoot and walk out with everyone happy… it’s time consuming sometimes but you may make a friend, inspire a member of the family to recruit you for something else or even toss your name out to someone else in casual conversation as an excellent photographer.
All this simply because you took the time to know your subject.
That is a major key to success… not only your photography but your customer relationship.
