Lady Gaga Tickets – Who Was The Original Gaga?
With her wardrobes of weirdness featuring everything from hair tangled into telephone shapes and glittering lobster face masks, Lady Gaga does more than strike a pose. She commands the attention of everyone in the room, whether they’re clued into her catchy chart-topping synth-pop or not.
But as bizarre as she seems, she didn’t simply emerge from the ether (she’d love to have you believe that, though). As a matter of fact, there are a number of pop celebrities that Gaga owes a great debt to. These pioneers didn’t just challenge the traditional notions of music, but of culture, as well—something she’s trying, in her shimmery, pop star way, to do herself.
So who’s on the list?
David Bowie: Number one with a bullet. Bowie made losing oneself in the rock star persona more theatrical, stretching into a kind of pop-cultural kabuki. Some people got it, others were terribly put off. As Ziggy Stardust, he represented the space face of the future, a rock ‘n’ rollin’ bitch with a raygun to his head. As the Thin White Duke, he became gaunter, full of energy (supplied largely from cocaine) but hollow inside. And throughout the period of the Berlin Trilogy, his music grew weirder, more experimental, and so were his outfits.
Like Gaga herself, Bowie played with androgyny as a way to shock more conservative cultural forces. But he also did it to express a kind of inclusivity. At the time, people wondered whether he was really a woman, or really gay. They wonder the same things about Gaga, speculating on whether she really has guy parts under those shiny dresses.
Madonna: The Material Girl is the most commonly cited pop figure when you read articles about Gaga. It makes sense—both took the idea of the female pop star and twisted it into a kind of performance art. Britney Spears is living that performance art, but doesn’t seem to consciously realize it; Gaga and Madonna are clearly cut from the same cloth as calculating entertainers that now how to provoke, how to keep things interesting and how to make heaps of money at the same time.
Lady Gaga certainly flaunts an open sexuality as Madonna did, but while Madonna dressed up like a virgin, Gaga’s imagery looks like it’s borrowed from a New York art gallery. One thing is for sure: Both stars may act vacuous, but both know exactly what they’re doing, as well.
Andy Warhol: This is perhaps the oddest influence of all, but the one that Gaga may have learned the most from. A recent New York Magazine article about Gaga says that she treated Warhol’s published diaries as a kind of Bible. He was figure who understood celebrity culture perfectly. The world is a plastic world, he said, where everyone gets 15 minutes. While some have claimed he was a rather shallow person for stating that, others could argue he was simply acknowledging a sad truth about the culture we live in and make ourselves. Rather than judging it, though, he reveled in it.
Gaga seems to get that pretty well.
