Jewelry Repair/ Watch Repair help.?
so, my grand father left me some old watches when he passed away, and im talking old. one seems like it is atleast from the 40′s. its made by a company acTa and below that it says 17 jewels. it looks like its gold, has gold hands, displays a rotating date, and a leather band. the band says on the inside “R11/16 Glove Leather, and 133. it has an unbreakable mainspring (if it helps.) the other is a “Wit Nauer” assuming its german. seems old, atleast the 30′s if not older. the Wit Nauer has a small dial, regular numbers , maybe ivory hands… not sure. the acta has a scrathed up dial, but still runs, the Wit Nauer wont run for more than a few seconds before stopping. anyone know how much it will cost to fix watches this old? or any background info on them?

Radium Dials $70.1 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Radium dials are radioluminescent watch, clock and other instrument dials. In the early 1900s glowinthedark clock and watch faces had the digits painted using paint containing radium, the most common version created by the United States Radium Corporation was called Undark. Radium dials were almost always painted by young women, who used to point their brushes by licking and shaping the bristles prior to painting the fine lines and numbers on the dials. This practice resulted in the ingestion of radium, which caused serious jawbone degeneration and malignancy and other dental diseases reminiscent of phossy jaw. The disease, radiuminduced osteonecrosis, was recognized as an occupational disease in 1925, and the affected workers came to be known as the Radium Girls. By 1930 all dial painters stopped pointing their brushes by mouth. Stopping this practice drastically reduced the amount of radium ingested and therefore, the incidence of malignancy, to zero by 1950.
