Htc Desire – A More Sensible Nexus One
The HTC Passion, also known as the HTC Bravo in the rumor corridors of the online mobile phone community for months, eventually went to Google as its OEM for its first foray into the mobile phone business. Re-badged as the Nexus One, it’s another landmark handset, though not in the same league as the iPhone. Then, the Taiwan-based mobile phone innovator did a little tweaking on its HTC Bravo handset and voila – you have the new HTC Desire that is now out in Europe.
Is the name fitting enough for what it offers? You can bet it is. Few can be as desirable. It’s great to know that T-Mobile and Orange carry the handset with Pay Monthly plans. T-Mobile has it for a ₤25/month 18-month contract with unlimited data. Orange has it likewise on its Dolphin 25 plan with 500 MB internet surfing for just ₤25/month on an 18-month plan.
Desirable Features
Smartphone and tech gurus are quick to point the Nexus One as being identical to the Desire with just minor cosmetic differences like an optical trackpad for the Desire, getting 0.4mm thinner and just 5g heavier. And apart from the Sense UI that distinguishes the HTC handset, they’re basically twins in shape, form and substance.
Starting under the hood, the HTC Desire uses the same awesome 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon running the same Android 2.1 Éclair OS. Going back to aesthetics, it shares the same display with a 3.7 Wide-VGA AMOLED capacitive touchscreen that supports 16 million colors and multitouch data input facility.
It also comes with the same accelerometer, proximity and ambient light sensors. Even their digicam features are identical with a 5-megapixel autofocus camera with LED Flash, geo tagging from its built-in GPS receiver. Video recording gets the same near high definition D1 (720 x 480) resolution with the Desire enjoying a 30fps advantages over the 20fps on the Nexus.
Multimedia is supported by the same media playback support for the popular video and audio content formats and stereo FM radio with RDS. It has 3.5mm headphone jack and A2DP profile support for wired and wireless stereo listening on headsets.
As phone radios, the Desire is a quad band GSM (850/900/1800/1900) with class 10 EDGE/GPRS data speeds on 2G. As a 3G phone, it’s a dual band UMTS/ HSPA for Europe while Nexus is a tri band UMTS (900/1700/2100) with versions for either side of the Atlantic, making the handset everywhere on 3G. You also get WiFi 802.11b/g for hotspot support as well as Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR and microUSB 2.0 for local data connectivity. You also get SatNav with an integrated GPS receiver and Digital Compass.
It comes with 512 MB flash ROM and 576 MB RAM with unlimited phonebook contact entries and call record as well as microSD expandability up to 32 GB. Battery profiles on both are a bit odd as the HTC Desire on the same 1400 mAh Li-Ion battery gets 6.6 hours while the Nexus gets 10 hours of talk time on 2G..
One of the benefits of the Android handset is its growing online app store with about 18,000 downloadable applications todate. It comes preloaded with an HTML browser with Adobe Flash 10.1 support and another unique HTC feature called Friend Stream which allows tracking updates across all your SNS accounts in Facebook, Twitter and Flickr while enabling message broadcasting to all your SNS friends.
